It's been a while since I posted here and I hope everyone is great! It's been a busy few months at the Creators Workshop school and at the easel as well.
Starting November 1st I'm changing our blog format back to a newsletter. The main reason is I'm unhappy with how the service I use here loads up the page with ads. If it were a free service I would understand but I pay for two services to mail this blog. I'll be heading back to Mailchimp.com which is an excellent content delivery service. Overlooked No More: Granville Redmond
Overlooked No More: Granville Redmond, Painter, Actor, Friend.
He was known for his California landscapes. Deaf since childhood, he acted with Charlie Chaplin in silent films, an early example of deaf representation in Hollywood.
The Los Angeles Times art critic Arthur Miller wrote in 1931 that Redmond was “unrivaled in the realistic depiction of California’s landscape.” Yet his style was never uniform: Some paintings left sections of the canvas exposed and chunky deposits of pigment, while others took on a smoother look.
Above all he was known for his paintings of golden poppies, the state’s official flower. His poppies accented his renditions of the rolling meadows of the San Gabriel Valley, often accompanied by purple lupines. Sometimes they complemented a coastal scene with bursts of yellow highlights.
It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of the passing of Bernice Leader. Her beautiful family was by her side and she was in no pain in the end. On behalf of our fellow Thursday night artists who had Bernice all to ourselves if only for a few hours , we offer our sincere condolences to her family.
As I sit here I think about the many dimensions of Bernice, as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Mother-in-law, and Friend to so many. And then I think about Bernice and art, and Wow, that was a true love affair! Bernice managed a very successful art consulting business and spent equal amounts of time creating wonderful art as well. Her friend Kathy and I fondly recalled the privilege it was to go museum hopping with Bernice. You'd better bring your A game! For me, three hours at the museum was enough, anything after that and my eyes hurt. But four hours at the Met was just getting started for Bernice, it was usually lunch break, then she'd pull out her little piece of yellow paper from the plastic wrap and would commence to suggest every prominent exhibit at all the major galleries in all of New York! Not to mention she could out walk most people 20 years younger than her! God how I'll miss that! I'll miss how she'd take a break from her painting in class, walk the room always with a kind word of encouragement to her fellow students. I'll miss her generosity about sharing her immense knowledge of artists and art history with my students and I. Mostly, I'll miss watching her create. From her first chalk lines on the canvas to her final statement, "I think I'm done!" It pains me that I won't get to witness that again. But I know she will always be with us. When that young student experiences the joy of their first brush stroke she'll be there. She'll be there with my adults when they finish their painting and say to themselves "Not bad", she's there. Today as I walked Lola, it was such a wonderful day. There was this perfect breeze softly moving against the trees. There was just the right amount of clouds moving across the blue sky with the Sun peeking through, and though I could not see her, I know Bernice was there. We'll always love you and miss you -your fellow Thursday night painters
